A 33-year-old New Jersey man is accused of using emergency LED lights, resembling those on a cop cruiser, to pull over his wife’s lover before shooting him dead.
Surveillance footage from the night of June 4 allegedly shows Juan Jesus Mejia Yanza following Rolando Acte Mejia from his home in Howell to a few different locations, according to an affidavit of probable cause obtained by NJ.com.
At one point, Yanza can be seen activating the lights to “pull over” the victim on White Street, where Mejia, 36, was later found dead in his car from two gunshot wounds.
The affidavit alleges that Yanza’s wife was in a romantic relationship with Mejia. The wife told investigators she and the victim were on the phone for about an hour the night he was killed. She said he abruptly ended the call around 11:30 p.m. after saying he was being pulled over, and didn’t respond to any subsequent calls or texts.
The surveillance footage allegedly shows Yanza returning to his home in Howell in the early hours of June 5.
Yanza was taken into custody on Friday and charged with first-degree murder and two related weapons offense, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office. He remains in custody at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution pending future proceedings.
