Baltimore Orioles minor league infielder Luis Guevara was killed in a jet ski crash off the coast of Florida, the team announced.
Guevara, 19, was on a jet ski Sunday evening off Lido Key, near Sarasota, when the watercraft collided head-on with another jet ski, Florida authorities said. The teenager was one of two people hospitalized after the crash. Two others suffered minor injuries.
“Luis was a beloved member of our organization, and we are devastated following his tragic passing,” Orioles general manager Mike Elias said in a statement Tuesday. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and teammates.”
The crash happened around 8 p.m. Sunday, investigators said. Both people who suffered minor injuries were on the same jet ski, which collided with the one carrying Guevara and another person.
Guevara was not the only Orioles minor leaguer involved in the crash, according to the team. However, the other victims have not been publicly identified.
The Orioles signed Guevara in 2023 as a 16-year-old prospect from Tinaco, Venezuela. In his first two years with the organization, Guevara played with the team’s Dominican Summer League affiliate, a common destination for Venezuelan teenagers.
This season, the Orioles promoted Guevara to their A-ball team in Delmarva. After 24 games there and two fill-in games at AA Chesapeake, he was reassigned to the organization’s Florida Complex League team, which plays in Sarasota. His last appearance came Saturday, and the Orioles postponed Monday and Tuesday’s games due to the jet ski crash.
