With New York under an extreme heat warning, the Mets took extra precautions Monday.
Those included a later report time for players and shorter rounds of batting practice before the series opener against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field.
Inside the Mets’ clubhouse, a video screen encouraged players to stay hydrated, to monitor their weight, and to be efficient with their pregame work outside.
“I know our group will continue to provide information, education to the players, as far as staying hydrated and things like that,” manager Carlos Mendoza said. “It’s that part of the year now where you’re gonna be playing under weather like this, so we’ll act accordingly and we’ll have the guys ready to go.”
The Mets designated four sections, as well as the Jackie Robinson Rotunda, as cooling stations for fans and made ice packs available at all fan assistance locations.
It was 90 degrees when the Mets players warmed up before Monday’s game, and it’s expected to be even hotter on Tuesday when starter Frankie Montas makes his season debut in his return from a lat strain.
“Just try to stay hydrated,” Montas told the Daily News with a laugh. “Trying to get quick outs, trying to not have a high pitch count and just trying to work quick.”
Tuesday’s forecast features a high of 99 degrees in Flushing. The National Weather Service’s extreme heat warning is set to remain in effect until at least 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
