With NYC Dems swinging left, try a Republican
Pearl River, N.Y.: With the array of Democratic primary candidates, it’s time to elect a Republican mayor for NYC in November. When the city had a Republican mayor in the past, it thrived and prospered. Streets were safe to walk on, crime was at an all-time low and the cost of living was affordable.
Zohran Mamdani is a socialist disaster who will make NYC worse than Bill de Blasio did in his terms, which we have still not recovered from. Mamdani is anti-American, anti-police and is willing to bankrupt NYC by giving everything away for free with no way of paying for it, except by taxing high-earners more and more, causing them to leave the city for more tax-friendly states.
Andrew Cuomo is a thief, liar and predator who was forced from the governorship because of his sexual harassment. Let’s not forget that all the people he killed had to die alone because of his COVID incompetence. This man was a good governor in his first term many, many years ago but became part of the corrupt political machine, and has never looked back.
Come November, let’s give a Republican the mayorship and turn things around. Curtis Sliwa may not be politically savvy, but I have faith that he will appoint people around him who know politics enough to get the job done and make NYC safe and prosperous again. Robert Brennan
Fear of the unfamiliar
Charlotte, N.C.: Here we go again! Republicans are up in arms because there’s a chance that a Muslim could become the mayor of New York City! I remember when JFK was running for president and Republicans were shaking in their boots because he was Catholic, and he would surely be taking orders from the pope. What scares me is how all the Republicans in our government have no fear of and are actually happy about taking orders from a moron! Ron Turek
Crashing capitalism
Whitestone: Is capitalism here to stay? / Some say it will never die / But was it meant to be that way? / Now we don’t know why / Mamdani whipped Cuomo’s hide / “Affordability” was his mantra / Young folks cheered progressive jive / Rich folks are having a tantrum / Mamdani, Bernie and AOC / They’re not afraid of socialism / Many right-wingers have one way to see / And it’s very close to fascism / All men are equal is the rule / But how is that applied? / For some it’s moral to be cruel / Don’t good and evil collide? / The greed of the right is crystal clear / The poor must survive on their own / Socialism isn’t something to fear / When comparisons are shown. Michael J. Gorman
Decision man
St. Petersburg, Fla.: To Voicer Joe Ewansky: I don’t have any claim to brilliance, but I’m smart enough to know you don’t bring a pitcher coming off an injury who hasn’t pitched in weeks into a game you’re winning with two outs and the bases loaded to pitch to one of the Dodgers’ best hitters, who promptly hits a walk-off grand slam. This when he had plenty of other choices. Oh, that’s right, he didn’t make that decision, the “organization” did. Just because someone holds a job doesn’t mean he’s good at it. How many World Series has Aaron Boone made it to? One, which he certainly helped to blow by turning that first game into a big turning point that all sports shows and articles stated. He’s managed to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory too many times to count, but go on dreaming about some mythical organization man making these decisions. Bill Barrett
Eternal shame
Nutley, N.J.: Regarding the murder of Montrell Williams, that beautiful, innocent child, by his father, sometimes only biblical justice will suffice. Arius Williams should be branded with the Mark of Cain and forced to wander the world shunned and reviled by all of humanity. Anne Waldron
Foreign-made
Staten Island: Please judge a book by his cover, or at least his clothes — from President Trump’s shoes to his tie, all not made in America. And let me not forget the MAGA hat that’s made where, of all places? China. I may not be rich, but as a former marathon runner, I ran only in sneakers made in America. Then Trump accepts a plane from where, of all places? Qatar. The Air Force One he flies in was good enough for every past president. Mark Tarasiewicz
For the takers
Manhattan: Re “Exiling refugees” (editorial, June 25): We used to have three branches of government, but six Supreme Court justices have chosen complicity. What will Congress do? Trump’s 940-page budget bill, the oligarch giveaway, is in the Senate. It includes draconian cuts to programs that sustain life. It will sell off public lands, destroy our clean energy economy and raise our already too-high energy bills. It will replace pristine lakes and forests with coal mines and drill sites. All to give bigger tax cuts to the obscenely wealthy. And they will do this with stolen money — ours! I want my tax dollars to pay for health care, housing, education, scientific and medical research, renewable energy, PBS and help for immigrants seeking freedom and a better life, not to put money in the pockets of billionaires so they can buy more yachts, planes and politicians. Lisa Harrison
Stock spin
Brooklyn: When the stock market tanked early in Trump’s term due to concerns over his tariff policy, Republicans and their echo chambers in right-wing media claimed that stocks were vastly overvalued under Joe Biden and the time had arrived for a major bear market to bring prices down. Now that stocks have recovered and are near in value to what they were when Biden left office, these same voices are bellowing that this is due to Trump’s financial genius! One conservative pundit even claimed that the Dow would soon hit 50,000, well above what it was when Trump took office on Jan. 20. So much for the “overvalued” stock market that Trump inherited from Biden and the need for a downward correction! Dennis Middlebrooks
Unvetted vacations
Brooklyn: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Events in the press concerning immigrants are so heartrending these days that one can only reflect on the Golden Rule. But I want to address a few questions to those planning to go overseas on vacation this year. Can you joyfully pack and go abroad as you would in days of yore, when to be an American meant a broad smile, a welcome and careless hours tanning on a beach or swimming in azure waters? Do you now have to consider whether the waiter serving you a mojito is the father, uncle, brother, aunt or what have you of that immigrant you saw on TV being arrested and unceremoniously deported to God knows where? How about those you will meet on the streets of this wonderful vacation spot? Maybe some are deportees? After contemplation, are vacations in a foreign land over? Shirley Forde
Ruled by the id
Swarthmore, Pa.: Albert Einstein once said there are three primal forces that rule the Earth: stupidity, fear and greed. Arguably, no one person, and no one politician, embodies and exemplifies this more than Trump. It’s true that he has useful gut instincts and a grasp of the angst of everyday Americans that have twice propelled him to the pinnacle of power. However, it also feels true that he is classically unfit in terms of intellect, temperament and impulse control to be an effective president and commander in chief. But, the man is our president for the next four years, and for me and millions of other Americans, we can only hope and pray that our worst fears of the damage he may do and the destruction he may wreak upon our democracy and our society are not realized. Ken Derow
Beacons of hope
Butler, N.J.: There is always a glimmer of hope in a dark world. With the great blessings of a new global leader, we can be grateful with new hope! The late Pope Francis and now Pope Leo XIV have been and are shining lights on the world stage. They are certainly a welcome drop of water in a sea of darkness! Emmet Murphy
