Former presidential candidate Andrew Yang appeared to express support for fellow entrepreneur Elon Musk’s proposed political party if it changes the status quo.
“If it breaks the duopoly I’m all for it,” Yang posted on Musk’s X platform amid conversation that Musk planned to finance a political movement to compete with the Democratic and Republican parties.
Yang competed in the 2020 Democratic primary, but dropped out in February of that year. After expressing discontent with the party, he formed the Forward Party as an alternative to his former team and the Republican Party.
Musk — a major Republican Party financier and devoted Donald Trump supporter in the 2024 presidential election — announced last week he would form the America Party after seemingly souring on the Trump administration shortly after it came to power in late January 2025. The South African billionaire expressed deep unhappiness with the president’s Big Beautiful Bill, which Musk criticized for adding to the U.S. national debt.
It’s not clear if Yang would join Musk’s proposed party, but Politico reported Monday that according to Yang, the pair had been in contact.
“I’m happy to help give someone a sense of what the path looks like,” Yang said.
He didn’t directly tag Musk in his social media post.
Pollster Nate Silver said Monday that 55% of Americans view Musk unfavorably and were unlikely to support a political party he operates nationally, though his $405 billion net worth could potentially influence a handful of Senate and House seats.
Trump posted on social media Sunday that he was “saddened” to see his former loyalist go astray.
“He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States,” Trump posted in a screed referring to Musk as a “train wreck.”
Billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban, who supported Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, endorsed a June social media post from Musk suggesting the U.S. needs another major political party.
