Ex-NCT member Taeil sentenced after pleading guilty to rape

South Korean singer and former NCT member Moon Taeil will serve three and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to rape.

The 31-year-old K-pop star and two other accomplices admitted last month to taking turns engaging in sexual acts with an unconscious tourist who visited South Korea from China last year.

According to the indictment, the men met up with the woman at a bar and after she was heavily intoxicated, took her to one of their houses where they assaulted her.

“The defendants took turns committing sexual acts against the victim, who was severely intoxicated and unable to resist. The nature of the crime is particularly grave,” said Judge Lee Hyun-kyung, according to The Korea Herald.

“As a foreign tourist assaulted in an unfamiliar environment, the victim likely experienced significant psychological distress,” the judge added.

Prosecutors were originally seeking a seven-year sentence for the three men, but the court decided on half that time, noting they were first time offenders, according to the BBC.

Taeil previously parted ways with NCT after the assault accusations were made public in August, though the details of the crime were not known at the time.

“We recently confirmed that Taeil has been accused in a criminal case related to sex crimes,” the boy band said in a statement via their label. “We have decided that Taeil can no longer continue team activities. We have discussed this matter with Taeil, and it has been decided that he will leave the group.”

In addition to serving three years and six months in prison, the court ordered all three men to complete a 40-hour treatment program for sexual violence.
