A woman died after being shot multiple times outside a North Philadelphia church overnight, authorities said.
The victim, who has yet to be named, appeared to be in her late 20s or early 30s, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told CBS News Philadelphia.
Police were dispatched to the 2000 block of West Lehigh Avenue shortly before 1 a.m. Friday, following multiple reports of shots being fired.
When officers arrived, they found the woman on the ground next to a metal fence in front of the Deliverance Evangelistic Church.
She was unresponsive and bleeding, NBC Philadelphia reported, citing Philadelphia Police.
The woman was rushed to Temple University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Officers found eight shell casings from a semi-automatic weapon next to the victim, suggesting she was shot at close range and was likely the intended target, Small said.
According to police, she was struck at least three times — in her chest, face and head.
No arrests had been made as of 10 a.m. Friday.
Investigators are now reviewing surveillance footage to understand how the shooting unfolded, NBC Philadelphia reported.
