Ole Miss football frosh Corey Adams shot to death, no arrest yet

A suspect was still at large Monday after fatally shooting Ole Miss freshman football player Corey Adams and wounding four others in outside Memphis, Tennessee over the weekend, authorities said.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputies were alerted to a shooting at 10:14 p.m. Saturday outside a residence in Cordova, a suburb just east of Memphis. Stopping a car at a nearby intersection, they found the 18-year-old Adams inside, suffering from a gunshot wound.

“They provided life-saving measures until Shelby County Fire arrived,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Shelby County Fire personnel later pronounced the victim deceased on the scene.”

The others’ wounds were not life-threatening, and the four arrived at nearby hospitals in personal vehicles, the sheriff’s office said. Multiple shell casings were scattered throughout the scene, and at least one home was riddled with bullet holes, WREG-TV reported.

“This incident is still under active investigation by our SCSO detectives,” a sheriff’s office spokesperson told the Daily News by email on Monday. “No arrests have been made at this time.”

Adams, a three-star prospect from New Orleans, was one of the top defensive linemen recruits in the U.S. He had moved to the area in January for spring practice and was supposed to begin playing his first season this fall, according to the Commercial Appeal. The football community, from the University of Mississippi to his former high school team in Louisiana, Karr Cougar Football, mourned a life cut short.

Words can’t describe this type of pain,” his high school team posted on social media. “We are heartbroken and tormented to pieces. Corey Adams was more than a football player! He was a friend, brother, son, student, and all around great young man. We never question God, but this is one we just don’t understand. This wasn’t supposed to be the end of his story.”

Adams had earned all-state honors for Edna Karr High School twice, according to ESPN.

Likewise, Ole Miss Football officials said everyone in the program was “devastated” in mourning its new recruit.

“We’re heartbroken by the passing of Corey Adams. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him,” Ole Miss Football said.
