Officer shot in North Bay Shore after body, blood trail found



A Suffolk County police officer was shot Thursday morning while investigating a homicide in North Bay Shore, authorities said.

The shooting happened during an investigation into the death of a man found near a home on New York Avenue in North Bay Shore late Wednesday afternoon, a police spokesperson told the Daily News.

The body of the victim, identified as an adult male, was discovered by residents just before 5 p.m.

The man was found in the bushes, according to Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer.

“A resident came home, saw blood on the street,” Beyrer said, according to News12 Long Island. “Another resident came home, saw the blood, and saw a body on the side of the road.”

The investigation continued into Thursday morning. Around 2:30 a.m., shots were fired in the area, ABC7NY reported.

According to News12, police officers appeared to take someone into custody near the scene just before 6 a.m. Thursday.

A police spokesperson confirmed to the Daily News that an officer was shot in North Bay Shore but did not provide further details. A press conference is scheduled for later Thursday.

The officer was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive, News12 reported.  The victim’s body was sent to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office as part of the ongoing investigation.
