Disgraced former Congressman George Santos bid adieu to his fans and haters in dramatic fashion before heading to prison Friday.
“Well, darlings… The curtain falls, the spotlight dims, and the rhinestones are packed. From the halls of Congress to the chaos of cable news what a ride it’s been!” the MAGA firebrand posted on X Thursday evening.
Santos was sentenced to seven years behind bars for after pleading guilty to federal charges including wire fraud and money laundering in August.
He was expelled from the House of Representatives in December 2023 after being elected to office based on a campaign full of lies about his academic and professional qualifications.
The 37-year-old Republican from Queens has maintained a conservative social media following despite his troubles. He claimed in court filings to have made $400,000 by recording Cameo videos in the aftermath of his scandals.
“Was it messy? Always. Glamorous? Occasionally. Honest? I tried… most days,” he confessed in his X post.
He went on to thanks supporters for a worthwhile “wild political cabaret” and thanked his critics for “the free press.”
Santos posted a much darker message to supporters earlier in the month claiming that if he dies in prison or has any sexual encounters, those things will not have happened voluntarily. But the farewell note he posted on his last night of freedom for a while struck a more optimistic tone.
“I may be leaving the stage (for now), but trust me legends never truly exit,” he said, signing the post “Forever fabulously yours, George.”
It’s not clear where Santos will serve his sentence. He was ordered to surrender to federal prison officials by 2 p.m. A judge recommended that he serve his time in the Northeast.
Santos told a Saudi state-owned news organization on Tuesday that he’s being sent to a minimum-security prison “camp,” but didn’t name a location.
