NBA veteran and former New York Knick Marcus Morris was arrested Sunday in Florida on a felony fraud charge.
Morris, 35, remained behind bars without bail on Monday, according to online jail records in Broward County. He was accused of writing a check with insufficient funds, and the records indicated he was held on an out of state warrant.
The arrest was due to an unpaid gambling debt, according to Morris’ agent, Yony Noy.
“Just so everyone understands this is zero fraud here,” Noy wrote on social media. “This is due to an outstanding marker with a casino. Apparently if you have over $1,200 they can issue a warrant for your arrest.”
Casinos issue markers as a form of credit with frequent players, but they typically must be used within 30 days. Failing to repay a casino marker is treated as writing a bad check under Nevada law, and not paying a marker worth more than $1,200 can indeed result in felony charges.
Morris was arrested at an airport in Broward County, according to online records. The largest airport in the county is Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International.
“Damn for that amount of money they’ll embarrass you in the airport with your family,” Morris’ twin brother and fellow NBA vet, Markieff, wrote on social media. “They got y’all really thinking bro did some fraud s–t. They could have came to the crib for all that. When y’all hear the real story on this s–t man. All I can say is lesson learned. Bro will tell y’all tomorrow.”
