The Yankees made another trade on Monday, sending Carlos Carrasco to the pitching-needy Braves.
Atlanta acquired the veteran right-hander for cash considerations. Carrasco, a 16-year veteran, had been pitching for the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate.
Carrasco earned a spot in the Yankees’ injury-riddled, Opening Day rotation with a strong spring training, but he has struggled in the majors this year and fell out of favor as a depth option in New York. The 38-year-old has a 5.91 ERA over 32 big league innings, and he displayed some of the worst stuff in baseball over eight games (six starts) with the Yankees.
A former Guardian and Met, Carrasco had a 3.78 ERA over 52.1 innings at Triple-A.
While Carrasco is far removed from his best self – he had a 3.27 ERA from 2014-2018 – the Braves are desperate for arms. Their entire Opening Day rotation is on the 60-day injured list, as Chris Sale, Reynaldo López, Spencer Schwellenbach, Grant Holmes and AJ Smith-Shawver are all out.
Carrasco wasn’t the only starter with an ERA over 5.00 that the Braves traded for recently, as they also acquired Erick Fedde from the Cardinals for a player to be named later or cash considerations on Sunday.
St. Louis recently designated Fedde for assignment.
