A Connecticut lawmaker has been arrested on new larceny charges — about five weeks after a separate shoplifting incident at a local Target.
State Rep. Raghib Allie-Brennan, a Democrat representing Connecticut’s 2nd Assembly District, turned himself in to the Bethel Police Department on Monday afternoon after an active arrest warrant was issued, officials told the News Times.
In a statement shared with the media, the 34-year-old Democrat said he had “voluntarily reported” to police on a date prearranged with his attorney and the police chief as he continues cooperating with authorities and taking accountability for his past actions.
“This was another step in the legal process, which I am following. I take full responsibility and remain focused on moving forward and making this right,” he said.
Allie-Brennan was released on a promise to appear in court on Aug. 5, officials said.
Authorities have not released details about the new larceny charge. Late last month, Allie-Brennan admitted to failing to properly scan merchandise at a self-checkout kiosk at a Target in Bethel, blaming the error on rushing to visit his ailing grandmother.
Explaining why he failed to scan two items at the self-checkout, Allie-Brennan said he “was in a rush to bring items to my grandmother in the hospital,” adding he was “unable to get a bag, and was juggling multiple purchases.”
House Speaker Matt Ritter, a fellow Democrat, told the Hartford Courant that he had spoken with Allie-Brennan about the most recent charge and expressed his concerns.
“Raghib will take some personal time away from the legislature over the next month to deal with the legal, political and personal ramifications — we are not in session and committees are not meeting,” Ritter said Tuesday. “I will reconnect with him after Labor Day to talk further.”
