Following the box office success of the newest “Superman,” another O.G. superhero franchise is heading back to the big screen.
Tim Burton‘s original 1989 “Batman” movie and its 1992 follow-up, “Batman Returns,” will swoop into theaters for a one-night engagement on Aug. 25.
Starring Michael Keaton in the titular role, both films have been remastered and will screen at over 160 Dolby Cinema at AMC theater locations across the U.S.
Announced Friday, the event marks the first time both films will be presented in Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos sound technology. Advance tickets are available now, but are quickly getting swept up.
“I hadn’t watched these films since I made them, and seeing them again with this level of clarity, beauty, color and sound felt really new and exciting,” Burton said in Friday’s announcement. “Dolby Atmos and Vision brought it all to life in a fresh way.”
Long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe dominated the big screen, Burton’s star-studded, Gotham City-centered films became instant classics — and laid the foundation for blockbuster success. In them, Keaton’s Bruce Wayne goes up against the comic’s most iconic villains: The Joker played by Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito as The Penguin, and Michelle Pfeiffer‘s Catwoman.
“Batman” grossed over $400 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing movie of 1989, more than doubling the sales for “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” according to Box Office Mojo.
The second installment, featuring Christopher Walken, Michael Gough, Pat Hingle and Michael Murphy, turned out nearly $267 million globally before Joel Schumacher took over the brand.
“Tim Burton’s acclaimed ‘Batman’ films deliver a dark, iconic vision of Gotham City that continues to influence the modern Super Hero genre today,” Warner Bros. Pictures global distribution head Jeff Goldstein said in a statement, adding that Dolby has “transformed” them into “completely new cinematic experiences.”
With the revival of the original “Batman” films, fans can get their appetites wet before the new Batman movie starring Robert Pattinson, titled “The Batman Part II,” is released in 2027.
