A Long Island man brandishing a sword was shot by police Tuesday after faking a hostage situation, according to Suffolk County police.
The man, identified as 33-year-old Joseph Restaino of Bay Shore, called 911 around 1:25 p.m. and reported a hostage being held at a residence at 1625 Ohio Ave.
When officers arrived at the scene, Restaino allegedly waved the sword and refused to drop it. After a Taser didn’t stop the suspect, at least one officer discharged their weapon.
Restaino was taken to South Shore University Hospital and underwent surgery, according to CBS New York, but his condition was unknown as of Wednesday.
A subsequent search of the residence found no hostages in the home.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina told CBS that Restaino has a history of mental illness, and made “indications that he was suicidal after he was shot.”
