A Minnesota man who initially told police he found his mother dead in their Duluth home was allegedly recorded admitting he killed her, according to charges filed Tuesday in St. Louis County Court.
Nathan Douglas Davin, 46, is accused of fatally shooting his 74-year-old mother, Maedean Davin, at their East Hillside residence late Saturday night, the Duluth Police Department said in a news release.
The victim appeared to have been sleeping in a recliner when she was shot in the face at close range, according to court filings reviewed by the Duluth News Tribune.
Police say the suspect knocked on a neighbor’s door just before 11 p.m., reporting “something about a fatality.”
Davin, who was wearing only boxer shorts at the time, appeared to be intoxicated, reported the Minnesota Star Tribune.
When responding officers arrived at the scene, Davin indicated he had woken up to find his mother dead in their living room.
During a subsequent search of his home, investigators found two pistols, ammunition and other firearms in an unlocked safe, as well as a 9mm pistol with apparent blood on a nightstand. Davin also appeared to have blood on his hands, authorities said.
Officials took him in for questioning, but he refused to speak and asked for a lawyer.
When he was later left alone in the interview room, he was allegedly recorded saying, “Goddamn it, I killed my mother.”
On Tuesday, prosecutors charged him with one count of second-degree murder with intent.
Assistant St. Louis County Attorney Kirstyn Oye requested $750,000 bail and said the state objected to any pretrial release, reported local outlet Bring Me the News.
