A man shot and critically wounded a woman in New Jersey and then fled to a nearby home, where he barricaded himself before turning the firearm on himself and dying by suicide, officials said.
The deadly violence, which is being investigated as a potential domestic violence incident, unfolded on Monday morning in Linden, near Carnegie St. and Monmouth Ave., according to News 12 New Jersey. When authorities arrived on the scene around 10:15 a.m., they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound on the sidewalk along the 600 block of Carnegie St., police said.
The victim, who was not identified, was rushed to Newark University Hospital, where she remained in critical condition as of Tuesday evening, RLS reported.
The gunman had already fled the scene by the time authorities had arrived. Police said he barricaded himself inside a residence — believed to be the victim’s home — where he was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His name has not been released, but one resident, who did not wish to be identified, told News 12 he was the victim’s boyfriend. They added that he lived in New York and would often visit the neighborhood.
“I’ve seen them in the backyard, ” the resident said. “They usually have cookouts in the backyard. I would see them sitting on the front steps talking to each other.”
Another neighbor told News 12 the pair “seemed really happy” and expressed shock over the deadly violence.
Resident Robert Vandevere, who has lived in Linden for 15 years, was left similarly stunned by the bloodshed so close to his own backyard.
“Nothing like this… It’s very quiet around here,” he told News 12.
An investigation, being carried out by the Linden Police Detective Bureau and the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force, is ongoing.
