U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi is expected to meet with NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch Monday afternoon, a police spokesperson said.
The meeting, planned at least a week ago, comes at time when President Trump has discussed the possibility of sending federal troops into more cities where he feels crime needs to be tamped down. Mayor Adams has insisted, citing the declining murder and shooting rate, that the NYPD doesn’t need any help.
Trump is also opposed to cashless bail and on Monday he signed an executive order threatening to reverse federal funding for states where suspects are often released without bail.
Tisch has railed against some facets of the 2020 state criminal justice reforms, noting on Friday, following a friendly fire shooting in which a Queens NYPD detective was wounded, that the suspect, a parolee, the night before was busted for fare evasion in Manhattan but was released with a desk appearance ticket to appear in court at a later date. Prior to the reforms, the offender could have been put through the system.
The NYPD spokesperson said that while there is not an agenda for the meeting, other than for Bondi and Tisch to have their first official face to face, it is possible any number of topics will be discussed.
