All aboard! Annual holiday model train display opens Thursday at Grand Central

The New York Transit Museum’s annual display of tiny trains opens to the public on Thursday at the Grand Central branch of the museum’s store.

The holiday display weaves 34 feet of “O”-gauge model railroad track through miniature New York City landmarks, including a recreation of Grand Central Terminal. The trains range from faithful replicas of the Metro North and New York City Transit fleets to a holiday-themed Polar Express.

The display is free and open to the public Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m; Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The train show runs through February 2026, though the store and the display will be closed on Christmas and other major holidays.

“We are proud to offer the Holiday Train Show free to the public each year. It’s a chance for everyone, from lifelong New Yorkers to first-time visitors, to step into Grand Central and be transported by the magic of trains, art, and the holidays,” Transit Museum Acting Director Regina Shepherd said in a statement.

The 2025 show also includes art by James Yang and Erin K. Robinson, in honor of the subway system’s 40th year bringing public art to commuters through subway posters.
