British boxer Anthony Joshua shared an update Sunday for the first time since he was injured in a car crash in Nigeria that killed two of his closest friends.
“My Brothers Keeper,” Joshua wrote in an Instagram post with a photo of himself with his mother, on the right, and family members of the victims, including the mothers of Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele.
Ghami and Ayodele, both 36, were killed in the Dec. 29 car crash on a highway in Ogun State. Joshua suffered only minor injuries in the crash and returned to the U.K. on Saturday, a few days after he was released from a Nigerian hospital.
The two men worked alongside the 36-year-old Joshua for much of his boxing career; Ghami was his strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele was a trainer. Just hours before the deadly wreck, Joshua and Ayodele posted short videos of them playing ping pong together.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, who was driving the car, was charged Friday with dangerous driving and driving without a license. His next court hearing was scheduled for Jan. 20.
Joshua was visiting Nigeria just 10 days after a fight with Jake Paul in Miami, in which he knocked out the content creator in the sixth round and broke Paul’s jaw.
The former heavyweight champion and 2012 Olympic gold medalist has family roots in Nigeria, and he briefly attended boarding school in the country.
