Ariana Grande faced a cringe-worthy question on the 2025 Golden Globes red carpet.
While chatting with Kit Hoover and Mario Lopez for Access Hollywood on Sunday, the “Wicked” actress, 31, was asked who the first person she called was when she found out she was nominated.
“Oh my goodness. Well, my mom,” Grande said, referring to her mother, Joan Grande, 67.
Hoover, 54, then asked Grande, “Is your grandmother still alive?”
“Yes! My Nonna. She’s 99,” Grande replied about her grandmother, Marjorie Grande.
“Nonna!” Hoover said to Lopez, 51, with a smile.
“Nonna was second,” said Grande. “And then Cynthia [Erivo]. And my acting coach Nancy Banks. Who I just called in the car on the way over here.”
The awkward interaction between Grande and Hoover went viral on social media as fans called out the journalist for her “crazy” question.
“I cannot believe she just asked Ariana if her grandmother is still alive 🫢,” a fan commented on the YouTube clip of the interview.
Another critic wrote, “Isn’t there a better way to ask that?? ‘How is your Grandma doing?’ is all that was needed there.”
“Why would she say that omg,” a different YouTube user added.
Hoover faced similar criticism from viewers on X (formerly Twitter).
“wtf would the reporter ask that?!?” one person tweeted.
“what the hell…,” someone else said.
“Ariana is a class act cuz what,” a different person wrote.
The Post has reached out to Hoover’s rep for comment.
Grande’s fans know that she has a close bond with her 99-year-old grandmother, who has accompanied the singer to many award shows throughout her career.
Last year, Marjorie made history as the oldest person to ever appear on the Billboard Hot 100. Grande featured her “Nonna” on her song “Ordinary Things” from her 2024 album “Eternals Sunshine.”
The track ends with Marjorie — who is Joan’s mom — sharing life advice.
“Never go to bed without kissin’ goodnight. That’s the worst thing to do; don’t ever, ever do that. And if you don’t feel comfortable doing it, you’re in the wrong place – get out,” she says.
In November, Grande flew home to Boca Raton, Florida to watch “Wicked” with her grandmother. They were joined by Grande’s brother, Frankie Grande, and her boyfriend, Ethan Slater.
“Flew to boca for a day to watch with Nonna at the movie theater I grew up going to every weekend, Cinemark 20 in Boca,” Grande wrote alongside her Instagram post of the group at the theater.
In the video, Marjorie sweetly held her granddaughter’s hand during her “Popular” performance.
