At least 1 dead in small plane crash in upstate New York, officials say

A small plane crashed in upstate New York Saturday afternoon killing at least one person, officials said.

The plane went down in the middle of an open field on Two Town Road around noon, Columbia County Undersheriff Jacqueline Salvatore said at a press conference Saturday afternoon.

Salvatore couldn’t comment on the number of fatalities but confirmed that sheriff’s deputies were “actively investigating a fatal plane crash.”

No buildings or structures were impacted by the crash, she added.

The Federal Aviation Administration later confirmed that two people were aboard a Mistubishi MU-2B when it crashed near Copake.

The twin-engine turboprop aircraft was headed to Columbia County Airport in Hudson, about 15 miles northwest of Copake, the FAA said.

The plane was traveling from an airport in Westchester County, about 30 miles north of New York City, the Times-Union reported, citing flight data.

The incident is being investigated by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board. No further information is available at this time.
