Bargatze vows Boys and Girls Club donation to keep Emmy speeches short

The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards began with a brilliant plan to keep speeches short.

The host of the evening, comedian Nate Bargatze, announced he’d donate $100,000 to the Boys & Girls Club, but with one catch.

For every winner whose speech goes over the 45-second limit, $1,000 per second will be subtracted from that donation. Conversely, if the speech goes under 45 seconds he will add $1,000 per second to the donation.

To start, “The Pitt’s” Katherine LaNasa went overtime while accepting her Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series win.

“That was an expensive wave,” Bargatze joked. “A lot of people at home were asking, are we penalizing the presenters if they go along or something? I just want to get it straight, we are not. Only the people that have worked the hardest to get here.”

When Hannah Einbinder’s speech went over 45 seconds as she accepted her award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy, she vowed to personally pay the amount she cost.

“I’m busy hosting,” Bargatze joked. “So I can’t keep track of all the money stuff.”
