Bethlehem, Pa., couple’s murder-suicide scene discovered by their kid

A Pennsylvania man fatally shot his girlfriend, then killed himself in a murder-suicide, authorities said Monday.

Greg Johnson, a 42-year-old Bethlehem resident, killed Sarah Rice, 39, with a gunshot to the head, then turned the gun on himself, the Lehigh County Coroner’s office confirmed Monday.

Officers were called to the couple’s home in the eastern Allentown suburb on Friday night after one of Johnson and Rice’s children walked in and spotted the grisly scene, according to the Morning Call.

Cops found Johnson, Rice and a handgun in the basement when they arrived. Both had sustained gunshot wounds, Bethlehem police said. Rice was pronounced dead at the scene just after 11 p.m., while Johnson was transported to a hospital, where he died.

At a vigil for the two on Sunday night, friends and family were baffled by the killing, the Allentown Morning Call reported. Johnson and Rice shared three children and had lived together for years, though they never married, according to the attendees.

“Every couple fights, but I would not have expected this,” Danielle Rau, who knew Johnson and Rice for years, told the paper. “They seemed like a very happy couple, taking care of their kids.”

Lehigh County District Attorney Gavin Holihan told the Morning Call on Monday that no suspects are being sought in the case and there is further danger to the community.
