Boxer Anthony Joshua hospitalized in Nigeria car crash, 2 dead

British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua was hospitalized Monday after an auto crash that killed two others on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways.

Police are investigating, local police commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo told BBC News. Officials had said earlier that Joshua’s injuries were relatively minor and that he would be OK.

“I can confirm to you that an accident occurred and the victim has been taken to the hospital,” Ogunlowo said.

The crash occurred at about 11 a.m. local time on the Lagos-Ibadan highway in Makun, Ogun State, according to Newsweek. Local media reported that Joshua was in the backseat of a vehicle that smashed into a truck stopped in the road. Social media was peppered with photos purported to be of a shirtless Joshua sitting in the vehicle amid shattered glass.

The Nigerian-born Joshua is a former world champion and Olympic gold medalist who triumphed over YouTube influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul in a knockout exhibition fight 10 days ago.
