Brinks truck backdoor busts open, bystanders pocket $300K

Police on Tuesday were still seeking dozens of sticky-fingered opportunists who made off with about $300,000 in cash that fell out the back of a Brinks truck in suburban Chicago.

Authorities have had no luck finding the perps in the village of Oak Park, Illinois, officials said Tuesday, and are asking for the public’s help.

It all unfolded a week ago, when a Brinks truck driver called police to report that while he was driving south on Austin Boulevard, “the backdoor opened by unknown means and three bags full of United States currency fell out,” the Oak Park Police Department said. “The complainant related that when they returned to the area of Jackson and Austin Blvd., he observed 50 to 100 hundred people removing money from the scene and fleeing the area on foot and in vehicles.”

In total they escaped with about $300,000 stuffed into their collective pockets, the driver told police.

Brinks was tight-lipped and would not say how the truck opened or whether the driver would be disciplined.

“In general, and in the interest of the safety of our employees and others who may be affected on matters concerning law enforcement, we do not comment,” the company said in a statement to WGN-TV, directing further inquiries to “the relevant law enforcement agencies.”

Oak Park police emphasized that even though the money may have been littering the street, taking it was theft. Anyone found with the stolen money could face jail time, police told CBS News.
