A Northern California father who authorities say used a knife to behead his 1-year-old son has been arrested, officials in Sacramento said Friday.
Andrey Demskiy, 28, was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail for murder and related charges, in what a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office has described as “one of the most horrific things” he has ever heard.
Deputies responded to a residence in Antelope, just outside downtown Sacramento, in the early hours of Friday after reports of a domestic disturbance, Sgt. Amar Gandhi told local television station KXTV.
Upon arrival, they determined that a “domestic violence incident had occurred” and that the male suspect was still inside the home, Gandhi said.
Deputies also learned the suspect, later identified as Demskiy, had also assaulted his wife’s mother, who had to be hospitalized to be treated for “relatively minor injuries,” according to Gandhi.
Demskiy refused to answer the door, Gandhi said. As deputies attempted to get him to surrender, they learned about the 1-year-old boy.
“[They] found out that Andrey threw the child at some point and the mother didn’t know about the extent of the injuries,” Gandhi told KCRA-TV.
That’s when they decided to force their way into the residence.
After what Gandhi described as a “physical fight,” deputies entered the home and detained the suspect.
“From there, they made probably one of the most gruesome discoveries,” Gandhi said. “[They] found the child’s head had been severed in that room.”
Investigators believe the gruesome crime happened after the man’s wife and mother-in-law left the home, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Demskiy was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail for murder, assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury, and corporal injury on spouse or cohabitant, officials said.
He’s being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 24.
According to authorities, Demskiy had no real criminal history prior to Friday’s incident.
