California Gov. Newsom calls legislature into emergency session to ‘Trump-proof’ state’s lefty policies

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has called for a special session of the state legislature to bolster the progressive state’s policies against Donald Trump’s impending presidency — telling reporters the plan is to “Trump-proof” state laws.

Newsom, a Democrat and staunch Trump opponent, asked for the special session to convene next month, with immigration, climate change, and abortion rights on the docket for discussion, according to KTLA.

“The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack — and we won’t sit idle,” Newsom said in a statement.

“California has faced this challenge before, and we know how to respond. We are prepared to fight in the courts, and we will do everything necessary to ensure Californians have the support and resources they need to thrive.”

The call to action comes as Trump gained significant ground in the progressive stronghold of California.

On Tuesday, Trump won 40% of the state’s vote on his way to securing the White House – a six-point increase over 2020 run where when he secured 34%, despite it being Vice President Kamala Harris’ home state.

Trump’s second presidential term will begin on Jan. 20, 2025.
