A Southern California man fatally shot a police officer, then fled at speeds of up to 150 mph on a motorcycle before another cop slammed into him to end the chase, officials said.
The unidentified suspect killed San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Nunez on Monday afternoon in Rancho Cucamonga, according to police. He then took off down the 210 freeway on a motorcycle, flying past cars at over 100 mph while cops trailed behind.
The chase ended in shocking fashion when an off-duty officer in a Toyota Camry veered into the biker’s path, deliberately collided with him and sent him and his motorcycle soaring into the air.
Both the bike and the suspect tumbled down the highway and into the median. The man was airlifted to a local hospital, where he was expected to recover and be charged with murder, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Deputy Nunez, 28, died from a gunshot to the head, authorities said. He was a six-year veteran in the department.
“His courage, compassion and dedication to protecting others reflect the finest traditions of law enforcement,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said. “We honor his life and service with gratitude; may his sacrifice never be forgotten.”
Nunez and a fellow officer had been responding to a domestic violence incident and were immediately met with gunfire, according to the governor.
