Car on fire in Lincoln Tunnel sends smoke billowing over Hell’s Kitchen

A car on fire in the middle of the Lincoln Tunnel sent plumes of dark smoke billowing above a Manhattan ferry terminal Sunday afternoon, fire officials said.

Around 1:15 p.m., firefighters and EMS received a call about ominous clouds of smoke hovering over the Lincoln Tunnel’s two brick ventilation shafts located at 463 12th Ave. in the midtown ferry terminal by W. 39th St., FDNY officials said.

Firefighters traced the smoke to a car in the center tube of the Lincoln Tunnel that was traveling from New Jersey to Manhattan when it caught fire, according to FDNY. In total, 78 firefighters from 20 different units responded and were able to get the fire under control by 2 p.m.

No one was injured in the conflagration.
