Timothy Cardinal Dolan will be replaced as head of the Archdiocese of New York in the coming days, multiple news reports state.
Pope Leo is expected to appoint Bishop Ronald Hicks of Joliet, Ill., to replace Dolan as Archbishop of New York and head of the second-largest archdiocese in the U.S.
Newsmax “Saturday Agenda” host Rob Astorino — who co-hosted a radio program with Dolan on SiriusXM’s Catholic radio channel — hinted at Hicks’ appointment in an X post on Monday.
“Strong rumors that @Pontifex has accepted the resignation of @CardinalDolan and will appoint Bishop Ron Hicks of Joliet, Illinois,” Astorino posted. “The move would signal the end of Dolan’s 16-year tenure as the highest-ranking prelate in New York.
Dolan submitted his resignation in February after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75.
Hicks, 58, has overseen the Diocese of Joliet — located roughly 30 miles outside of Chicago, where Pope Leo was born — since 2020.
The bishop from Illinois previously served as the auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Chicago from 2018 to 2020.
Prior to overseeing the Archdiocese of New York, Pope St. John Paul II appointed Dolan as archbishop of Milwaukee in 2002.
The archbishop of New York has served in two papal conclaves, first electing Pope Francis following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, before serving in the conclave to elect the current holy father now expected to accept his resignation.
Dolan was named a cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.
