A man accused of fatally shooting a woman and wounding two responding officers during a domestic assault incident in Chesapeake, Va., has died following his arrest, officials said Thursday.
Shaun Boker, 39, was arrested in the neighboring city of Portsmouth early Thursday morning following a “brief standoff” with police, the Chesapeake Police Department said in a news release.
Boker was wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman that occurred late Wednesday night.
Chesapeake police officers responded to an apartment in the 500 block of Willow Bridge Court around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, they heard a woman inside screaming for help.
As officers attempted to enter the apartment, a suspect, later identified as Boker, began shooting at them through the door. Two officers were hit by gunfire and taken to a local hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.
Police eventually entered the home and located the woman. She was taken to a hospital with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds and was later pronounced dead.
Boker was arrested by Portsmouth police on Cypress Road just before 8:30 a.m. Thursday, and was later transferred to Chesapeake police detectives for further investigation.
During the standoff, Boker sustained superficial cuts to his arm, police said. He was taken to a hospital for medical clearance before being booked into the Chesapeake City Jail.
“While at Maryview Hospital, Boker experienced a medical emergency and later died,” Chesapeake authorities said.
His death is being investigated by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations, according to police.
