The Chicago surgeon arrested in connection with the double homicide of his ex-wife and her husband in Ohio last month was indicted by a grand jury Friday on charges of aggravated murder and aggravated burglary while using a firearm silencer.
Michael McKee, 39, is accused of fatally shooting Monique Tepe, 39, and her husband, dentist Spencer Tepe, 37, in their Columbus home in the early hours of Dec. 30. Police discovered their bodies around 10 a.m. after a friend of the couple called 911 to request a welfare check.
Their two young children, ages 1 and 4, as well as the family dog, were also in the home at the time, but were not physically harmed, police said.
The slayings — dubbed the “Tepe murders” — drew national headlines and fueled widespread speculation. The couple was killed just one month shy of their fifth wedding anniversary, family members told Columbus ABC affiliate WSYX. They tied the knot at the very residence where they were ultimately murdered.
McKee, whose divorce from Monique Tepe was finalized in 2017, was arrested last Saturday in Rockford, Ill. — about 450 miles northwest of Columbus — nearly two weeks after the tragic killings. He was booked into the Winnebago County Jail, where he will remain as he awaits his extradition to Ohio.
OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, the Rockford hospital where he worked as a vascular surgeon, said it is cooperating with investigators.
Earlier this week, McKee waived his right to an extradition hearing. His next hearing, in Winnebago County, is scheduled for Jan. 23.
On Friday, a grand jury in Franklin County indicted McKee on four counts of aggravated murder and a single count of aggravated robbery.
