Cap is back.
After repeatedly saying that he was finished playing Captain America, Chris Evans is reprising the role in “Avengers: Doomsday,” with an unexpected twist.
The first teaser trailer for the MCU movie reveals that Steve Rogers (Evans) will return — and that he’s now a father with a new baby.
His return comes as a shock, as he was adamant that he was finished with the MCU. “You want to get off the train before they push you off,” he told The New York Times in 2018.
The Hollywood Reporter initially confirmed his return in Dec. 2024.
However, in a January 2025 Esquire story, Evans denied rumors that he would return for “Avengers: Doomsday.”
“That’s not true,” Evans, 44, told the outlet at the time, adding that similar rumors “happen every couple of years” since he last played Cap in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”
“I’ve just stopped responding to it,” Evans said. “Yeah, no — happily retired!”
The new “Avengers: Doomsday” teaser isn’t officially online yet, but played before screenings of “Avatar: Fire and Ash.”
According to Variety, the teaser shows Steve riding a motorcycle up to his farmhouse, wearing a blue helmet similar to his “Captain America” look. He then holds a baby as the text onscreen reads, “Steve Rogers will return for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’”
Evans is also a new dad offscreen. After Evans tied the knot with Alba Baptiste, 28, in 2023, the couple welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Alma Grace, in October.
“Avengers: Endgame” left Steve as an old man, passing down his shield to his former sidekick Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), which made Sam the new Cap.
In “Avengers: Endgame,” Steve went back in time to find his old love, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). It’s currently unknown if Atwell will appear in “Avengers: Doomsday.”
In the Esquire story, Mackie told the outlet that he “didn’t know” about the rumors of Evans possibly returning.
“I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then. At least, he didn’t tell me it was on the table, because I asked him. I was like, ‘You know, they said they’re bringing everyone back for [Doomsday]. Are you coming back?’ “He goes, ‘Oh, you know, I’m happily retired,’ ” Mackie said.
Evans also made a cameo in 2024’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman – but not as Cap. He played The Human Torch, from the 2005 “Fantastic Four.”
“Avengers: Doomsday” has a slew of other MCU stars confirmed to return.
Robert Downey Jr. will return – but in a twist, he will play Doctor Doom instead of reprising his role as Tony Stark. Fans bashed the actor as being “lazy” and doing it for a “cash grab.” His Iron Man (Tony Stark) was killed off in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”
Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Paul Rudd, Letitia Wright, Florence Pugh, and Wyatt Russell are also among the big names who will return.
There will also be several “X-Men” actors in the movie, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, James Marsden, Channing Tatum and Rebecca Romijn.
“Avengers: Doomsday” hits theaters Dec. 18, 2026.
