After breaking weekly records to become the highest-grossing play in Broadway history, George Clooney’s “Good Night, and Good Luck” is making TV history with its upcoming livestream on CNN.
Producers announced on Thursday that the broadcast — the first time a live performance of a play will ever be televised — is scheduled to air on June 7 at 7 p.m. ET across CNN, CNN International and streaming on CNN’s website.
The Saturday show is the play’s last scheduled evening performance at New York City’s Winter Garden Theatre. It’s also the night before “Good Night, and Good Luck” competes for five 2025 Tony Awards, including Best Actor in a Play for Clooney.
“I can’t tell you how exciting it is to do something that’s never been done,” Clooney said in a statement. “CNN is the perfect place to bring this story of courage to so many more people than we could have ever hoped. Live TV. No net. Buckle up everyone.”
Based on the 2005 historical film of the same name, “Good Night, and Good Luck” recounts CBS news journalist Edward R. Murrow‘s groundbreaking exposé on Senator Joseph McCarthy and his anti-communist campaign during the 1950s.
Two-time Oscar winner Clooney played news producer Fred W. Friendly in the film, but instead stars as Murrow onstage — his Broadway debut and first play since “Vicious” in 1986. Clooney also co-wrote and co-produces the production.
