Coach struck by stray bullet at Texas youth baseball tournament

A baseball coach was stuck by a stray bullet Sunday after gun shots rang out near a youth baseball tournament in Texas.

The incident occurred at TheRac Baseball complex in Katy around 10 a.m., the Waller County Sheriff’s Office said.

The 27-year-old coach was hit in the shoulder.

The coach was air-lifted to a hospital and has since been released.

The sheriff’s office said three people were shooting at targets nearby.

“There was bullets flying everywhere. It wasn’t one shot,” Corbin Geisendorff, an assistant coach for another one of the teams, told ABC 13. “There’s bullets flying everywhere off the poles, onto the field. It’s just unbelievable.”

Geisendorff said he saw the victim, who was quickly attended to.

“There was a gentleman who was already there,” he told the station. “They used a belt to tourniquet his arm, you know, stop the bleeding really quick.”

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots on Saturday too, but said Sunday’s shots were fired closer to the baseball field.

Investigators said three persons of interest had been identified but no arrests have been made. They said it did not appear to be a targeted shooting.

Geisendorff said the team would not participate in tournaments at the complex in the future.

In a statement posted on Facebook, TheRac Baseball said all games and practices at the fields were canceled indefinitely.

“We are taking every step possible to ensure this does not happen again on our property. Any future practices or games at the facility are at a pause until law enforcement and our internal investigation has been completed to ensure the safety of all that visit the facility,” the statement read.

Katy is about 30 miles west of Houston.
