CT high school closed after social media threat; suspect ID’d

A Connecticut high school was closed on Tuesday after a social media threat that police later linked to a child in Arkansas.

Officials initially announced Darien High School would start on a two-hour delay before deciding to close for the full day.

“The Darien Police Detective Division has identified a juvenile resident of the State of Arkansas as being responsible for a threatening social media post toward Darien High School,” the department said in a statement late Tuesday morning. “The post was made recently on Instagram and referenced a firearm.”

Detectives worked with Meta, the FBI and the Connecticut Intelligence Center to trace the account. The child who made the treat, which was specific to the one school, is now being questioned by law enforcement in Arkansas.

No other information about the suspect was released.

Interim Superintendent Eric Byrne announced later on Tuesday the threat was determined to not be credible and that after-school athletics would proceed as scheduled.

However, police will provide extra patrols at all Darien schools and at homecoming events the next few days, Byrne confirmed.
