CT man arrested for DUI crash that killed moped rider

A Connecticut man has been arrested in connection with a drunken car crash that killed a man on a moped in April, authorities announced Thursday.

Chrishod Johnson, 33, was detained Wednesday, the Norwalk Police Department said in a Facebook post. He was charged with second-degree manslaughter and driving under the influence.

Jose Olavarria, a 52-year-old Norwalk man, was killed in the wreck. Olavarria was piloting a moped at the corner of West Ave. and Reed St. just before 4 a.m. on April 13 when Johnson struck him, according to police.

First responders transported Olavarria to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Johnson stayed at the scene after the wreck, the Norwalk Hour reported at the time.

The following investigation included “canvassing the area for surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses and reconstructing the accident using evidence from the scene,” Norfolk police said. It culminated in Johnson’s arrest warrant being issued on Wednesday.

His bond was set at $50,000, and his next court date is scheduled for Aug. 14.

The crash between Johnson and Olavarria was not the only deadly moped accident in Connecticut this year. In June, 16-year-old Antony Gutierrez Silva struck and killed moped rider Juan Otilio Tista Tista, 25, in Fairfield, according to authorities.
