Danny DeVito turns 80, celebrated by co-stars

Actor Danny DeVito had a very “sunny” birthday Sunday, with his long-running comedy and its co-stars celebrated.

“This man was born 80 years ago today,” the “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” creator and co-star Rob McElhenney wrote on Instagram. “He could still drink you under the table. He could still make you laugh harder than anyone you’ve ever met. He could still make you feel like you’re the only person in the room. He could still give you the best advice you’ve ever gotten and make you feel loved no matter what. He’s an American treasure. There is only one Danny DeVito. Happy Birthday!!!!”

DeVito plays businessman Frank Reynolds on the long-running sitcom, which wrapped its 16th season last year and is in filming number 17. The Hulu series has been renewed through season 18 and is the longest-running non-animated sitcom in television history.

His fellow cast members all wished their colleague and “Taxi” star kudos.

“Happy Birthday to one of the most generous, fun loving, funny, kind, smart, lovely people I know,” wrote Mary Elizabeth Ellis, who plays the waitress at the dive bar “the gang” operates. “I’m so grateful to have known and loved you (and your wonderful family) for 20 years! You have enriched my life in endless ways. Gratitude doesn’t cover it all, but it’s a great place to start. Happy Birthday, Danny! I love you a lot.”

Kaitlin Olson, who plays Deandra “Sweet Dee” Reynolds on the show, hammed it up — literally — in her Instagram tribute.

“Happy birthday to my favorite (rum) ham,” the actress wrote alongside a photo of the pair of them chomping on ham. “Danny DeVito is everything you want him to be. Lights up every room, makes sure everyone is taken care of, gives his whole heart to everything and everyone he loves. Here’s to 80 more. I wouldn’t put it past him.”

The show also blessed his landmark.

“Happy 80th birthday to the legend that is Danny DeVito,” the “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Instagram account noted on the platform. “We hope you have a great one, Dr. Mantis Toboggan” — a referrence to the character’s alias.
