Delaware school bus driver dies after being pinned between two buses

A school bus driver was killed Thursday morning after she was reportedly pinned between two buses outside a middle school in Delaware, officials said.

The shocking incident occurred just before 7 a.m. in the parking lot of Gauger-Cobbs Middle School in Newark, Del., NBC Philadelphia reported.

Delaware State Police said in a statement posted early Thursday that troopers were investigating “a serious crash” at the school parking lot, adding there were no reported injuries to the students.

The driver, later identified as 54-year-old Wanda Montalvo de Garcia, was taking part in a routine evacuation drill when she was pinned between the two buses, school district officials told local ABC affiliate WPVI.

Montalvo de Garcia reportedly went into cardiac arrest shortly after emergency personnel arrived at the scene. She was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition but was later pronounced dead.

Investigators have not shared any additional details about the incident.

“They can’t give out too much information,” the victim’s son, Roberto, told NBC 10. “All they can say is that the bus pinned her, they were doing a safety inspection, she went to the back of the bus, the other bus coasted down and hit her.”
