Denzel Washington is owning up to leaking secrets about “Black Panther 3.”
The Oscar-winning actor, who recently spilled the beans about the unconfirmed Marvel film while promoting “Gladiator II,” says he called to apologize to director Ryan Coogler following the slip-up.
During an appearance on Thursday’s episode of Variety’s “Awards Circuit” podcast, the “Training Day” star revealed how the conversation went after he nearly broke the internet with the surprise scoop.
“I called him and apologized for talking about the movie, and right there sitting with him was his beautiful wife,” Washington shared. “He’s still Ryan, humble and full of ideas. Whatever he writes, I’ll read.”
Marvel has not yet officially announced a third film in the blockbuster franchise, which has previously starred Chadwick Boseman and fellow Oscar winners Lupita Nyong’o, Daniel Kaluuya and Forest Whitaker, among others.
The studio is known for keeping a tight lid on details about its projects until carefully curated marketing initiatives are set in motion.
But during an interview with Australia’s “Today” show last month, Washington loosely discussed projects he has in the pipeline following his forthcoming Broadway run in a new revival of “Othello,” which begins performances at the Barrymore Theatre on Feb 24.
“After that, I’m playing Hannibal. After that, I’ve been talking with Steve McQueen about a film,” he said. “After that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next ‘Black Panther.’”
