Driver dies in fiery crash after hitting New Jersey toll plaza

A 36-year-old driver died Thursday night after his car slammed into a New Jersey toll booth and burst into flames.

The deadly collision occurred at the Atlantic City Expressway Egg Harbor Toll Plaza in Atlantic County shortly before 8 p.m., according to New Jersey State Police.

Driver John Warlow, of Hammonton, was reportedly behind the wheel of a Ford SUV going westbound when he appeared to lose control of the vehicle, hit the toll booth and “the vehicle became engulfed” in flames.

It’s unclear if Warlow was pronounced dead at the scene or later died at a hospital.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation on Friday.

Video obtained by WPVI in Philadelphia shows three fire engines blocking traffic near the toll booth as the charred SUV laid on its side next to one of the booths.

Three people were killed when their car hit the same toll plaza in 2021, according to NJ.com. That collision, in the eastbound lanes of the Atlantic City Expressway, took the lives of two men and their 14-year-old sister shortly before Christmas.

The toll plaza is located in Hamilton Township, roughly 120 miles south of Manhattan.
