A mysterious presence of drones reportedly stopped a medevac chopper from rescuing a person injured in an auto crash last week.
The helicopter was dispatched to a Somerset County crash site on the evening of Nov. 26 where Raritan Valley Community College security guards had closed roads in anticipation of a landing, according to NJ.Com.
A fire department captain reportedly aborted the airlift on account of drone activity that still hasn’t been explained. The FBI is investigating their presence. It’s not clear if the drones that obstructed the chopper rescue are connected to the clusters of drones spotted over Morris and Somerset counties in recent weeks. Authorities said they were first noticed Nov. 18.
Some of those sightings raised concerns in part because they happened near a military base and President-elect Trump’s Bedminster golf course property. Officials said the drones appeared larger than the ones typically used by hobbyists.
The Federal Aviation Administration barred drone activity over Trump’s property through Friday, while the matter is being investigated. Police don’t believe they pose a threat to public safety.
The condition of the person needing to be airlifted to a New Jersey hospital last week — and how they might have arrived at one — isn’t known. It’s also not clear how many drones were in the area that night or how close they got to the chopper.
