A young man was fatally shot after exchanging gunfire with another driver as they both sped down a Bronx street Tuesday — with the doomed driver calling a cab to get to a hospital after crashing his car, police sources said.
The dueling drivers sped south on Southern Blvd. in Belmont around 3:35 p.m., exchanging gunfire for several blocks until the 27-year-old victim was struck near E. 187th St. just outside the Bronx Zoo, cops and sources said.
The victim, driving a red Hyundai sedan and shot in the torso, crashed near the corner of Southern Blvd. and Garden St., slamming into a stop sign.
“There were a whole lot of rounds,” said a 36-year-old man who works at a neighborhood deli. “It was crazy. This doesn’t happen around here during the day time.”
The other gunman, driving a black Honda CR-V, fled the scene, leaving the victim behind in his crashed car. The victim, whose name was not immediately released, called a cab to St. Barnabas Hospital, but he could not be saved.
“It was like a movie,” said the deli worker, still shaken hours after the chaotic shootout.
There were no arrests as police continued an investigation.
