An elderly woman died and two firefighters were injured Wednesday night in a blaze inside a 35-story apartment building in Harlem, FDNY officials said.
Some 78 firefighters and EMS personnel rushed to the building on East 122nd St. and 2nd Ave. at 6:59 p.m., where a fire had erupted on the 19th floor — and began evacuating the building, according to the FDNY.
When first responders gained entry to one apartment on that floor, they found a 72-year-old woman, officials said. EMS transported the injured woman to Metropolitan Hospital, where she died of her injuries.
The woman was not immediately identified; police said they were working to locate her family.
One firefighter suffered minor injuries to the face and another firefighter suffered smoke inhalation while battling the flames, officials said. They were both transported to Metropolitan Hospital, and were in stable condition.
The fire was placed under control around 8:06 p.m., officials said. The FDNY was investigating the cause of the fire.
No one was displaced in the incident.
