Election expert Steve Kornacki leaving MSNBC after 13 years

Steve Kornacki, known for his expert analysis on election results, is the latest high-profile exit at MSNBC.

The bespectacled, Gap khakis-wearing data oracle has been tapped to serrve as chief data analyst for NBC News and NBC Sports, according to the Los Angeles Times.

In his new post, Kornacki will provide statistical analysis for polling and election results, as well as major sporting events. The Boston University alum is also set to appear on “NBC News Now,” “Meet the Press,” “Today” and “NBC Nightly News.”

Kornacki, 45, joined MSNBC in 2012 and went on to anchor several shows, including the 4 p.m. hour of “MSNBC Live,” “MTP Daily” and “Up with Steve Kornacki.”

He also served as a co-host on the ensemble show “The Cycle,” featuring onetime congressional candidate Krystal Ball, conservative columnist S. E. Cupp and former hip-hop journalist Touré.

After going viral with his energetic take on the 2020 presidential election, the openly gay journalist and author was named one of People magazine’s “Sexiest Men Alive.” In 2021, Kornacki reportedly signed a “four-year, multimillion-dollar” deal with MSNBC’s then-parent company, NBCUniversal.

His new status with NBC News will allow the former New York Daily News reporter to pursue other projects that are unrelated to politics and sports.

Kornacki is the latest major loss for MSNBC, which is being spun off by its corporate owner Comcast into a new and independent, publicly traded cable television business named SpinCo.

Last month, a programming shake-up at the liberal-leaning network saw the cancellations of “The ReidOut,” hosted by Joy Reid, “The Katie Phang Show” and “Alex Wagner Tonight.”
