Former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore remained behind bars Thursday, amid conflicting reports on whether he’d make his first court appearance one day after he was fired.
Moore, 39, was canned Wednesday in a shocking move, with the university citing an “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member.
Hours after the announcement, police confirmed Moore had been arrested a few miles south of the school’s football stadium. Cops detained Moore in Saline, Mich., to investigate an alleged assault, Pittsfield Township police said. He was held in Washtenaw County Jail overnight.
Authorities have not released any details on Moore’s arrest, and his immediate future remained murky on Thursday.
Officials at the jail told The Associated Press that Moore’s first court hearing would be held Thursday, but the county prosecutor’s office told ESPN and other outlets that no charging decisions had been made in Moore’s case, and there would be no arraignment on Thursday.
“The matter involving Mr. Moore remains under active investigation by law enforcement,” the prosecutor’s office told ESPN.
Moore was formerly the offensive coordinator at Michigan and took over the head job after the Los Angeles Chargers hired the school’s former coach, Jim Harbaugh. Coming off a national championship in Harbaugh’s final season in 2023, the Wolverines went 8-5 in Moore’s first season and 9-3 in his second. They remain scheduled to face Texas in the Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31, with Biff Poggi set to serve as interim coach.
