The family of a missing 84-year-old New Jersey man said Monday they’d received the “worst news possible” about the retired school teacher.
Authorities began their search for Alan Levin on Saturday in rural Atlantic County after his family reported him missing. Police found a body fitting the missing man’s description on Sunday near a bridge where the man’s black Honda was parked, but couldn’t confirm it was the former educator, NJ.Com reported.
The man’s son, Kevin M. Levin, indicated Monday that was the case.
“On behalf of my family, I want to thank all of you for rallying around my father,” he posted on Facebook. “Your well wishes and assistance have given us all strength and comfort during this incredibly difficult time. Unfortunately, we received the worst news possible this morning about dad.”
Kevin asked that the family be given time to grieve privately and said information about final arrangements would be made available.
He’d posted notice his father was missing over the weekend.
Family members searched for the former Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District teacher at “his favorite spots” to no avail. The octogenarian was said to have enjoyed strolling the Jersey Boardwalk and exploring empty parking lots. He was last seen around 6 a.m. Saturday.
His body was reportedly found on the bank of a waterway leading into the Mullica River in southern New Jersey.
