Fan suffers life-threatening injuries in fall at Penguins game

A man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after falling from the upper level stands during Monday night’s Penguins game in Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Public Safety Department said it was alerted to the fall during the Penguins-Blues game at PPG Paints Arena around 7:15 p.m.

The unidentified man fell from the 200 level of the arena, hit a person in a suite and then continued falling into the lower 100 level.

Todd Derr, who witnessed the incident, told WTAE the man was “teetering” before going over the railing, then appeared to smash through the Plexiglass on the suite level.

Paramedics responded immediately and rushed the man to the hospital. His condition was unknown as of Tuesday afternoon.

The person who was hit during the fall was evaluated on the scene but declined further treatment.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with that person and their family, and hopefully they’re OK,” Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said following the team’s 6-3 win.

The incident marked the third such fall at a Pittsburgh stadium so far this year. On Saturday, a worker fell from the Acrisure Stadium scoreboard and was critically injured. In April, a man fell 21 feet onto the warning track at PNC Park during a Pirates-Cubs game. He’s still recovering from his injuries.
