A deadly shooting that forced the lockdown of Georgia military base Fort Eisenhower was sparked by a jealous ex-lover, according to police.
Natravien Landry, 25, was publicly identified Monday as the suspected shooter and appeared in court on a murder charge.
Landry was on a break from duty Saturday morning when he went to visit an ex-girlfriend who lived on base and with whom he shared a child, federal authorities said.
Investigators said Landry arrived to find the woman in bed with another man, Army reserve Sgt. Andre Stewart, according to local CBS affiliate WRDW. Landry confronted Stewart, 24, and allegedly assaulted him before shooting him dead.
The base was locked down for about an hour before an “all clear” was announced. Landry fled the scene and headed west, cops said. He was captured three hours later driving on Interstate 85 south of Atlanta, about 180 miles west of the military base outside Augusta.
Arresting officers spotted Landry throwing a 9mm handgun out of a car window. They recovered the weapon, and authorities said Landry confessed the murder to an Army investigator.
Landry was scheduled to return to court Wednesday for a detention hearing. He was a member of the Army National Guard, one of nearly 30,000 people stationed on the massive facility southwest of Augusta.
Stewart joined the military in 2019 as an Army human resources specialist, Stars and Stripes reported. He transitioned to a reserve role in 2023 and was assigned to the 400th Military Police Brigade at Fort Meade, Md. Stewart was originally from Clarksville, Tenn., while Landry is from Abbeville, La.
